Overview
Most business owners know motivation matters. Few have thought carefully about where it actually comes from.
It’s easy to assume that people — yourself included — are either motivated or they’re not. That some days you have it and some days you don’t. That if your team aren’t performing, the answer is a pep talk, a bonus, or a better commission scheme.
This workshop challenges all of that.
Motivation isn’t a feeling you wait for. It’s a system you build. And most of the levers business owners reach for — money, pressure, enthusiasm — are either the wrong ones, or applied in the wrong way.
Over two and a half hours, we’ll look at what actually drives motivation — in yourself and in the people around you.
You’ll work on:
- Understanding why motivation follows importance — not the other way around: Why “I just don’t feel motivated” is rarely the real problem — and what question to ask instead.
- Identifying what’s demotivating your team without you realising it: The behaviours, habits, and management styles that quietly kill motivation — and how to spot them in your own business.
- Hiring and keeping A-Players: Why motivated people don’t need motivating — and what to look for when you’re building a team that drives itself.
- Using the right levers: Why money works less than you think, recognition works more than you think, and what autonomy, mastery, and purpose actually look like in practice.
- Understanding what drives different people: Why 80% of people are motivated away from pain and only 20% towards reward — and why getting this wrong means you’re speaking a foreign language to most of your team.
- Building motivation into your business structure: When and how to use 1-to-1s, team meetings, and annual kick-offs so motivation isn’t left to chance.
What you’ll leave with
A clearer understanding of what’s actually driving — or undermining — motivation in your business, the practical tools to influence it more deliberately, and a simple process for making it a consistent part of how you lead.
Note: You’re welcome to bring your laptop/tablet to write notes and make plans.
